Living a Outdoor Oriented Lifestyle in Cedar City, Utah

Cedar City, Utah, with a population of just under 30,000, is located in southwestern Utah's Great Basin. Fourteen parks and plenty of yearly festivals provide for Cedar City's entertainment. The historical downtown is lovely and has some good offerings. Southern Utah University (SUU) makes Cedar City a college town. With nearby Dixie National Forest nearby the community has a healthy mix of outdoor opportunities with nearby  - hiking and skiing being the best - and cultural ones.

Where to Retire in Cedar City and Home Prices

We are not aware of any active adult communities in Cedar City.  According to Zillow, the median listing price of a home in mid-2022 was $358,551, up over 21% during the past year.

What Is Special about Cedar City

Cedar City hosts no less than 17 festivals a year including the Skyfest, with hot air balloons.  Its access to the outdoors is definitely a top attraction.

What Is Not Special about Cedar City

The area has a high earthquake risk factor, and there isn't a lot of ethnic diversity.  For non Mormons, the concentration of people with that religion (70%) might be a negative.  Social security income is taxed.

Climate and Physical Environment

Winters are very cold and the summers get quite warm. The elevation is high at 5,800'.

Restaurants & Cultural Scene

The University  University (SUU) contributes to the cultural scene. Some of its attractions include the American Folk Ballet, Halverson String Quartet and Orchestra of Southern Utah. The Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery and the Cedar City Arts Council also add to local culture. The restaurants are good, but not a huge draw. There is a local library.

Crime

Crime in Cedar City is a little over half the national average.

Medical Facilities

Valley View Medical Center was named a national top 100 hospital for three consecutive years.

Transportation

There is a Cedar City Regional Airport ; the city is serviced by Cedar Area public transportation.
