Newport is a small waterfront town that is home to scenic beaches, boating, kayaking, hiking, and fishing. There are trails throughout the town that lead to parks and Newport's two lighthouses which are popular tourist spots. Boat tours and whale watching are popular, as is the town's 9-hole golf course that is just across the street from the Pacific Ocean. The Performing Arts Center is home to a group of resident companies and visiting performers.

Newport is a bit isolated, with Eugene about 90 miles away and Portland over 130 miles away. The weather is not ideal as there are a lot of overcast days and about 190 days with precipitation.
