Granite Falls is a very small town of about 4600 people in the west central foothills of North Carolina. Lakeside Park along Lake Rhodhiss will soon provide a major recreational outlet for the town.  There is boating on the lakes in the area and golf as well. Hickory is the largest nearby town, along with Lenoir. The elevation is about 1100' above sea level. The area is rural and hilly - popular with vacationers.  The climate is a bit milder than in the rest of North Carolina.  This part of western North Carolina, which includes the retirement magnets of Asheville and Charlotte, has become extremely popular for retirees and developers of active adult communities. Charlotte is 53 miles away, Asheville is a bit further to the west.

Granite Falls has had its ups and downs. There is not much in the way of local shopping or restaurants. Wal-Mart has a very large store in town.

Climate and Physical Environment

Granite Falls is just over 50 miles from Charlotte near the southwestern corner of the state. Hickory is the nearest big town. Asheville is to the west.  There are hills and reservoirs in the area.

Restaurants & Cultural Scene

For major culture one will have to go to Hickory, Charlotte, or Asheville. But the Caldwell Arts Council and Foothills Performing Arts are a local resource. 

Crime

Crime rate is slightly above average.

Medical Facilities

The nearest hospitals are in Hickory, about 10 miles

Transportation

Charlotte Airport is about 54 miles. Granite Falls is just a few miles north of I 40.
