Macon is full of history and historical sites dating back to the Creek Indians, The Civil war, and its Antebellum culture. Today Macon is an urban community with many schools of higher education and medical facilities.

There are several museums in Macon, including The Allman Brothers Band Museum;  Georgia Sports Hall of Fame; Tubman African American Museum which is the largest African American museum in Georgia;  The Macon Symphony Orchestra performs at the Grand Opera House in downtown Macon, as does the youth symphony, and the Middle Georgia Concert Band. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970, it is now the performing arts center of Mercer University.
