Living a College Town Lifestyle in Orono, Maine

A relatively small and peaceful college town, Orono is the home of the University of Maine in Penobscot County, Maine. The population is just over 9,000 but swells by additional thousands when college is in session. This college town is partially surrounded by two rivers, the Penobscot and the Stillwater. Orono is on Rt I95 in central Maine, just north of Bangor.

Orono is pretty far up, north or Bar Harbor in the interior. The average July high is 80, the average Jan. high is 28, and the average Jan. low is 8. September gets the most precipitation, 4".  The average winter snowfall is 66 inches.

Restaurants & Cultural Scene

Living in a college town can be very stimulating. The Fay Hyland Botanical Plantation and the Lyle Littlefield Ornamental Trials Garden are local attractions. There is a public library.

There is  very little crime in Orono.

Medical facilities

Hospital and medical facilities are in Bangor, about 6 miles away.

I 95 runs very near Orono.
