Living a College Town Lifestyle in Claremont, California

The City of Trees and PhD.'s, stunning college community Claremont, California, is located some 30 miles east of Los Angeles. It is home to the nationally renowned Claremont Colleges. This consortium consists of seven schools including Pomona College, Claremont McKenna College, Scripps College, Harvey Mudd College, Pitzer College, Keck Graduate Institute, and Claremont Graduate University. Approximately 5,000 students attend these elite colleges and contribute to the prevalent academic community.

Aside from the colleges, Claremont is admired for its tree-lined streets and historic buildings. Money magazine rated it in 2007 as the fifth best place to live in the U.S. (the highest rated place in California). The town is primarily residential. Commercial activity centers around The Village, a popular area of street-front small stores, boutiques, art galleries, offices, and restaurants. The Village is near the Claremont Colleges. A new multi-use development including a cinema, boutique hotel, retail space, etc. was added in 2007.

Where to Retire in Claremont and Home Prices

There are active adult communities in the area (see link to Claremont Active Communities at left). Other retirement communities include Pilgrim Place, Claremont Manor and Mt. San Antonio Gardens. Real estate tends to be expensive, reflecting Claremont's desirability and California prices in general. In early 2023, Zillow pegged the median home value at $876,821.

The historic Padua Hills Theatre, Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden are located here. The Claremont Colleges provide many cultural offerings.


Claremont is relatively safe, the crime here is a little over half the national average.

Doctors Hospital, Ponoma Valley Hospital.


Metrolink provides light rail transportation from Claremont towards LA or San Bernadino.
