Living a Boating Lifestyle in Hertford, North_Carolina

Hertford is a small town good for boating and fishing in North Carolina's Inner Banks region. There are lots of bays and rivers for cruising and fishing, and some of the developments have slips attached to the homes. The population was 2,185 at the 2008 census.  Hertford is the county  seat of Perquiman county. This town in northeastern NC tretches from the Albemarle Sound to the Great Dismal Swamp, Perquimans means "Land of Beautiful Women."  Formerly a lumber center, agriculture is now the main industry.  Photo above courtesy of NASA.

 It is hard to be accurate about median home prices in a town like Hertford because the area combines high-end waterfront active adult communities with low-end housing by some of the lower income locals. Zillow reported the median home price was $261,543 in early 2023.  The median household income in the area is about $40,000.  High-end properties can be found in the local active adult community, Albemarle Plantation.

What Is Special about Hertford

Great fishing and a low cost of living in North Carolina. Just 50 miles from Norfolk and its airport.  the famous disc-jockey Wolfman Jack is buried in Hertford, Catfish Hunter is the town's most famous resident.

What Is Not Special about Hertford

Unless you are an outdoors person there is not a whole lot going on in Hertford.

Hertford is located in northeastern NC along the Albemarle Sound. The average January low temperature is 33 and the average July high is 89. The wettest month is August.
