Living a Boating Lifestyle in Hiawassee, Georgia

Hiawassee is a small town of less than 1,000 bordering Lake Chatuge (Hiawassee Lake is in NC).  Boating is an important pastime in this lakeside community.  Our lake offers 150 miles of shore line that can be enjoyed for boating, hiking, golfing, and fishing.The town is very close to the North Carolina and South Carolina borders. There are local arts and crafts festivals, a county fair, gardens, music festivals and weekly music on the square from local talent. If you like to golf, the area has 3 upscale golf courses. The tallest peak in Georgia, Brasstown Bald welcomes hikers, nature lovers and picnics too.

We are not aware of any active adult communities in the area, but we predict they will be coming.
Average home value was $243,333 in mid-2021, according to Zillow.

Lake Chatuge is a real plus for the area. Seems like a good retirement area with a laid back lifestyle and many activities.

What Is Not Special about Hiawassee

Hiawassee is a very small town in a pretty remote area.  During the winter the population declines.

Climate and Physical Environment

On the border of Georgia, NC, and SC.The highest peak in Georgia, Brasstown Bald, along with the mountains, valleys and lake.  Protected by the USFS and TVA from the forest to the lake.  The 150 mile shore line of Lake Chatuge (Georgia and North Carolina). The average July high temperature is 84 and the average January low is 25. The wettest month is March (6.4").

The area's community colleges offer continuing education possibilities (North GA Tech and Young Harris College); FredHamilton Rhododendron Garden; Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds

The theft and property crime rate is above the national average in Hiawassee, but for violent crimes the rate is below the national average.

There is a small hospital in town, in addition to doctor offices (many from Atlanta with sitelite offices here),  several dentists and an eye doctor. 

Transportation

The nearest Airport is in Athens, Georgia, about 90 miles away, and the nearest international airport is in Atlanta, about 120 miles away.
