Living a Boating Lifestyle in Port Charlotte, Florida

Port Charlotte on Charlotte Harbor is a very marine oriented community. Situated as it is with so many canals, many homeowners have their boats at slips in the backyard!  From here there are miles and miles of protected bays and rivers on the way to Gulf of Mexico.  Located in southern Florida, Port Charlotte attracts many retirees who come for its warm winters  - the average age is quite high at 49.

Where to Retire in Port Charlotte and Home Prices

Residential areas of the county are primarily single-family neighborhoods, along with many condos and villas. An amazing 40% of the homes have water access thanks to a maze of canals and estuaries, complete with hundreds of species of marine life. Dozens of active adult developments, neighborhoods, and gated communities of every type are available in Cape Coral (see link at right). Some have facilities like golf courses,clubhouses, or tennis courts - some have no facilities.
Compared to nearby Punta Gorda this is not a high profile town nor is it pretentious - but it can offer a very nice lifestyle for a reasonable amount of money. The median home value was $176,400 in late 2018, according to Zillow.

What is special about Port Charlotte

Port Charlotte was named #1 Best Place to Retire by CNN Money. Charlotte Town Center Mall. Charlotte Sports Park is the spring training home of the Tampa Bay Rays. Charlotte Harbor and 165 miles of canals make the area great for boating.  Port Charlotte is one of the great housing buys in Florida.A hidden jem would be driving towards manasota beach through south gulf cove,east englewood and rotonda these places i feel are distant enough from Port Charlotte if you want even less population. These areas are the best places to buy since it has been kept quiet for so long . Boca Grande is less than a mile away where the Bushes vacation and is the top location in FL for fishing.

What is not special about Port Charlotte

Port Charlotte was hard hit by Hurricane Charley in 2004.  The housing downturn has reduced home prices which is bad for owners but good for buyers. Unemployment in the region is high.

Climate and Physical Environment

Port Charlotte is just to the north of Fort Myers on the southwest coast of Florida. There are plenty of bays and rivers opening up the Gulf of Mexico. Winters are about as warm as they get in the continental U.S.; summers are hot, humid, and it rains almost every day for a brief period.

Restaurants & Cultural Scene

The Port Charlotte Cultural Center boasts a 500-seat theater. You can also take year-round classes in every kind of subject, from languages to dancing. Nearby Fort Myers is also brimming with cultural opportunities just short hop away.

Crime in Port Charlotte is slightly lower than the national average.

Medical facilities

Fawcett Memorial and St. Josephs Hospital Port Charlotte are the local hospitals.

Transportation

Nearby Fort Myers has one of the busiest airports in Florida with service from both Southwest and Jet Blue.
