Living a Beach Lifestyle in Islamorada, Florida

Islamorada is one of the largest towns in the Florida Keys that run from Miami to Key West.  This beautiful beach town is on  a group of islands barely above sea level about midway down the Keys.  There are 2 Islamorada's - Islamorada and Islamorada Village of Islands. People live and vacation here for the water and the laid back way of life - almost everyone is a fisherman, boater, or beach lover.  Islamorada sports some of the best and most prolific fishing in the world.

Where to Retire in Islamorada and Home Prices

There are  many different neighborhoods on various keys to choose from - most of which are on or near the water.
Average real estate prices are high, hitting almost $600,000 in 2007 before settling back to earth. Like in most of Florida, prices are off. In late 2014 City-Data reported the median selling price to be just under $350,000. However, Zillow reports the median home value in mid-2018, was $685,900. These prices can be deceptive and are skewed by many homes selling for millions of dollars - yet more modest dwellings do exist.

What is special about Islamorada

It never freezes in Islamorada and you are surrounded by the most brilliant blue water you could imagine.  The area has sensational sport fishing and beautiful homes. Ted Williams lived here,  which is about all you need to know about how good the fishing is.

What is not special about Islamorada

It's very expensive. It is very small and insular. When hurricanes come (and they do) you must evacuate up a long and slow highway.

Climate and Physical Environment

January's average temperature is about 70 degrees, and July's average is 84 degrees.

Restaurants & Cultural Scene

The Islamorada Fish House at Mile Marker 62 is well worth a stop for great fish. There are numerous other restaurants as well where the fish is almost always assured to be fresh and local.  Local culture is mostly aimed at enjoying the great out of doors.

Crime

Crime in Islamorada is lower than the national average.

Medical facilities

Mariners Hospital is about 7 miles away.

Transportation

Nearby Marathon has an airport with limited service. Miami is about 2 hours away by a beautiful but slow highway.
