Living a Singles Lifestyle in Savannah-GA, Georgia

As one of the most beautiful college cities in America, Savannah is an appealing and cultural community. Home to four institutions, this city of 132,000 was planned in England before it was settled, and is a testament to the idea of urban planning. It is laid out in a grid with frequent squares; homes and stores are placed along the squares. It is a popular tourist destination. Each year almost 7 million tourists visit Savannah. Like any city it has its marginal areas.

Many active adult communities are being built in the Savannah area (see link at top left). Zillow reports the median home value was $265,881 in early 2023, which is an increase of 18.8% over the past year .

What Is Special about Savannah-GA

The Savannah Victorian Historic District and its 22 park-like squares make up one of the largest National Historic Landmark Districts in the United States. Savannah is rich in history with many classic homes.  But it is the squares that make this town so beautiful and special. There are dozens of tourist attractions for culture, history, and nature.

What Is Not Special about Savannah-GA

Some parts of town are economically challenged. You have to like living in a tourist town. Summers are hot and humid.

Climate and Physical Environment

Savannah is located on the top of eastern Georgia's Atlantic coast. The average July temperature is just over 80 degrees and the average January temp is in the high 40s. The wettest month is August (7"). Located on the Savannah River, it is the largest port in Georgia. Savannah has missed most of the big hurricanes that have hit its neighbors.

Restaurants & Cultural Scene

Savannah has a full range of cultural resources in dance, music,  and theatre. The Savannah Community Theatre and the Little Theatre of Savannah are just two of these. The Savannah Music Festival is mentioned as one of the best in the world. Thanks to its being a tourist center, there are plenty of interesting restaurants.

Crime

Violent crime rates are higher in Savannah than in the rest of Georgia and the U.S. Property crime rates are about the same. The rates will vary by neighborhood.

Medical Facilities

At least 3 hospitals serve Savannah - Memorial Health University Medical Center, Candler Hospital, and St. Josephs.

Transportation

Savannah/Hilton Head Airport serves the region. Amtrak also has service here. The downtown areas are very walkable. A high percentage of people ride public transit.
