Living a Golf Lifestyle in Lufkin, Texas

There are a surprising number of golf courses in Lufkin, Texas, which has been selected as one of the first to receive “Texas Certified Retirement Community Certification”. Crown Colony Country Club is one of the nicer facilities. As part of its certification process, Lufkin, located in Angelina County, had to demonstrate many other characteristics in addition to providing plenty of recreation.

Where to Retire in Lufkin and Home Prices

Lufkin was selected as an all-American City in 2003 and routinely surfaces as an affordable place for active adults 55+ to live. Located near the southeastern tip of Texas, it has a warm climate. There is a strong economic base, many restaurants, and at least 3 private retirement communities for active adults in or near the town. According to Zillow, the median listing price was $179,910 in mid- 2019.

What Is Special about Lufkin

Lufkin was the All-America City in 2003. It has the Ellen Trout Zoo; several excellent golf courses, including the Crown Colony Country Club, Lufkin Course, and the Neches Pines Course; the Museum of East Texas; and many large lakes, including Lake Sam Rayburn. The headquarters of all four United States National Forests and two United States National Grasslands in Texas are located in Lufkin. They are the Angelina, Davy Crockett, Sabine, and Sam Houston National Forests, and the Caddo and Lyndon B. Johnson National Grasslands

Lufkin is located in east Texas about 100 miles from Houston.

Restaurants & Cultural Scene

The Texas Forestry Museum, one of the few museums of its kind in the country, the Museum of East Texas, and the newly constructed Angelina Center for the Arts Temple Theater provide cultural venues. A gallery of western art, featuring some of the country's leading artists, is found in the Lufkin City Hall. The "Best of Lufkin" awards by the Lufkin Daily News listed The Ellen Trout Zoo as "Best Place for a Family Outing" and "Best Place to take a Date". The Museum of East Texas was voted "Best Museum" and Kit McConnico Park was voted "Best Park". Angelina College is a two-year institution.

Crime

The crime rate is well above average.

Medical Facilities

Two major hospitals, Memorial Health System of East Texas and Woodland Heights Medical Center, provide an array of medical facilities, including those for cancer diagnosis and treatments, cardiac care, kidney disease, diabetes treatment, and physical rehabilitation. More than 156 physicians practice in Lufkin. The Lufkin State School is another health care facility.

Transportation

A modern airport, Angelina County Airport, named as Texas' Airport of the Year in 1996, is located beside Highway 59 between Lufkin and Diboll. The Union Pacific Railroad, the Angelina and Neches River Railroad, and the Texas South-Eastern Railroad also help industries meet their transportation needs.
