Living a College Town Lifestyle in Greenwood, South_Carolina

Greenwood is a small college town of about 22,000 in northwest South Carolina.  There is a very large lake and 2 small colleges in the area, including Lander University.  The town hosts several important festivals during the year, including the Festival of Flowers and Festival of Discovery.

There is at least 1 active adult community in the area (see link at top left) that are located on Lake Greenwood's 212 mile shoreline. According to Zillow, the median home value was $160,050 in early 2022, but homes in these active communities will be higher.

What Is Special about Greenwood

The Festival of Flowers in June and the South Carolina Festival of Discovery in July are big attractions. Lake Greenwood State Park was built in the 1930's by the Civilian Conservation Corps. The area around Greenwood is locally billed as the "Lakelands", due to several lakes for recreational fishing and diverse terrain for hiking trails.

Greenwood is a  fairly small town in a remote area of the state.

Greenwood is located in northwest South Carolina. The average July high temperature is 91  and the average January low is 30. The wettest month is January (5").

Restaurants & Cultural Scene

The Festival of Discovery and Festival of Flowers are evidence of the effort made to revitalize the town of Greenwood. Lander University and its 3,000 students provide other cultural opportunities.

Crime

The crime rate is very high in the town of Greenwood compared to other small towns. The rate of crime in Greenwood is 30.05 per 1,000 residents during a standard year. According to crimegrade.com people consider the southwest part of town the safest. Retirees living in one of the lakeside communities will feel safe.

Medical Facilities

Self Regional Healthcare is a surprisingly large hospital with many advanced centers such as those for cancer, neurosurgery, and heart disease.

Transportation

The nearest large airport is 60 miles away in Greenville, SC.  Greenwood is below average in walkability when compared to other towns.
