Living a Beach Lifestyle in Stonington, Connecticut

Stonington, a former fishing village of about 18,000,  is one of the most charming towns in Connecticut.  The downtown area features a lovely street with many good restaurants and interesting shops. There is a big public beach right there, along with the Stonington Harbor Light, the first lighthouse established by the federal goverment.  Other beaches are in the area.The surrounding streets are lined with former sea captain's mansions and many public buildings.  Stonington, which has a busy harbor, is a very popular tourist destination. The town includes portions of Mystic, Old Mystic, Lords Point, and Pawcatuck. The average age is a quite high 48.

In town there are many antique homes to choose from. Or further out there are properties with acreage.
According to Zillow, the median home value in late 2021, was $436,510 in Stonington. Given the important differences in location near the water and the different towns, plus size and condition of the homes,  prices will vary considerably. Homes and condos in the Borough wil approach and often go over $1 million.

What Is Special about Stonington

Stonington is one of the oldest colonial towns in America. It has had quite a resurgence and is extremely charming.  The Pawcatuck section features the Mechanics Street Historic District.

It is expensive and also tends to be crowded in tourist season.

Climate and Physical Environment

Stonington is the last town in Connecticut before Rhode Island.  The waters of New York, Connecticut, and Stonington all come together off Stonington.  It is cool in winter although not as cold as inland, thanks to its proximity to the sea.

Restaurants & Cultural Scene

The area has a number of tourist attractions, including the Indian casinos of Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun. Mystic Seaport is extremely interesting, and kids of all ages like the Mystic Aquarium. There are several high quality restaurants in Stonington.

Crime in Stonington is just under the national average.

Medical Facilities

The nearest hospitals are in Westerly (11 miles) and New London (8 miles).

Transportation

New London has a small airport with limited commercial service. I 95 and Amtrak run through town.  New London offers ferry service to Long Island.
